I am a kind, disciplined person who loves classical music and loves teaching it to children and adults. I graduated from Loyola University in New Orleans with a Bachelor of Music Degree in performance and pedagogy. I was a soloist with the New Orleans Symphony on six separate occasions, having won the opportunity to be a soloist in regional competitions. I participated in numerous and varied competitions in New Orleans as a child and as a teenager and won first place in many of them. I think piano lesson are a wonderful way to learn confidence and discipline.
I was an apprentice to Jane Bastien at the age of 12, teaching her groups occasionally in her studio. I taught private piano lessons in New Orleans for year starting in college and continuing to the present. I earned college credit at Indiana University after my junior year of high school. I earned a Bachelor of Music degree at Loyola University of New Orleans in performance and pedagogy. I encourage my students to persevere, to set reasonable goals and take small steps toward those goals, being systematic about their practice.
I like the Bastien method. I use the multi-key approach for very young students. I use the Middle C approach for older kids. I also like the Keith Snell and Martha Ashleigh series for theory. I like David Carr Glover and William Gillock pieces. Alfred books are excellent. My favorite books are the Bastien ones because I studied with Jane Bastien and I know her method so well but I do, especially for theory, branch out and provide a variety of types of pieces for my students. The Bach Prelude #1 is beautiful and not too hard.
I am a very kind, accepting, and non critical person in general and this applies to my teaching style as well. No child should be afraid or feel coerced at lessons. Most kids want to do recitals eventually but I do not force this on children right away. If a child wants to be in a recital but has some fear, I encourage them to play a duet with me for their first recital experience. I provide group lessons where the kids can play for each other to try out their performing skills. I encourage a reward system for kids who follow their assignments and do what is asked.
