I'm an energetic classical singer who loves sharing music with my students and my passion for singing. I graduated from Drake University in 2017 with a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance and later received my Master's degree in Voice Pedagogy in 2019 from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee. I've performed various operatic roles at Drake University as well as at the Boston Conservatory and in the Boston area. I have also taught as a Teaching Fellow at the Boston City Singers and as a private instructor with Merry Melody Music Academy in Boston.
I've begun teaching students 3 years ago with Boston City Singers as a teaching fellow. Having a good breathing technique and maintaining good posture is essential to teaching voice students. The breath is the foundation of the voice and if students breathe well and comfortably, they will sing with more ease and will have much more fun singing! I also make sure that each student is given a specific exercise or piece of music to work on each week in addition to songs, so that their warmups complement the songs they are working on.
For beginning voice students who are late elementary/early middle school, much of the learning will be on breathing and posture as well as being expressive as they sing in addition to basic music skills. Their warmups are likewise based on those points. Intermediate students who are in later middle school and high school will focus more on singing with a clear tone that is not breathy nor strained as well as more intermediate songs, including introduction to foreign language pieces, or musical theatre tunes. More advanced students in high school will be focused on producing a tone that is classical and coordinating with good breath as well as polishing good Italian language songs with an introduction into operatic arias (most will be from operettas, depending on the students capability).
Every student is at a different level in their musical abilities. What I find most important in teaching voice is that the students are able to find joy in what they are singing. Students are able to learn music more easily when they find something to connect to, whether it be a tuneful melody or funny lyrics in a song, or the way a sound is made in an aria or ballad. Being able to make that connection in music is so rewarding to me as a teacher. I also expect my students to practice every week so that they can be prepared for the next lesson.
