ABRSM passed with distinction
I love working with kids and see them have an interest to learn more about music! I am 19 years old and have been learning classical piano for 13 years now. I have taken ABRSM London School of Music exams and continued to showcase my skills in school, shows, and gigs. I also played piano for the choir and band in high school and that taught me how to perform with a group and not just myself. Similarly I took this skill and now play in a band at college and acan see how everything I have learned has payed off. Seeing students grow up to use those same skills in the future is also something that can really benefit them.
I am just starting to teach in person but throughout the pandemic I taught beginner theory such as how to count, the notes on the piano, and understanding rhythm. I also taught many of my parents friends kids whatever songs they were interested in on the piano so they found love for the instrument first. I love teaching because seeing the student come to class with something they specifically heard and want to learn is very rewarding. Knowing they enjoy learning and implementing the knowledge they have to execute the piece is all a teacher would want.
For beginner students, I first start to see how they learn best if its at a slower pace or if they can absorb quickly. Once I can understand them and their learning habits, I will start by teaching the basics such as how to count, the names of the notes, etc. Understanding the basics is really important so something I will want to make sure is that they understand why the notes are split in a measure a certain way(for example). After basics are learned, then it becomes more fun and I can then lead the class or what they are also interested.
I will have the have a notebook so that every class we can write down what the student needs to practice and and work on till next time. The student might feel bored in the beginning but I hope to show the student the fun in learning music and how rewarding it feels to learn a piece. Watching the student grow and start to have interest on their own is what is most important. I think it is important to keep them excited to want to keep learning, so I might implement giving them stickers after a new skill is learned or give them the option of picking a song they want to learn.
