Overview:
Hi! My name is Anita, and I have operated a flute studio in the Phoenix valley and Seattle metro area since 2010. I am now opening a new studio in the Atlanta metro as I begin a new position at Georgia State University. I also teach beginning-intermediate piano. I was a full-time Band Director for the Glendale Elementary School District in Glendale, Arizona for five years, teaching grades K-8 band and general music, and a teaching assistant and instructor at University of Washington. I also recently worked for Music Center of the Northwest, a nonprofit community music school in North Seattle, specializing in student and community relations. As a teacher, I specialize in teaching beginners, moving quickly to establish a quality of tone and practice procedures to master the instrument for whatever purpose (school enrichment, personal enjoyment, performance, auditions for college, whatever you want to do!) I have experience working with adults who want to revisit an instrument they put down, and who want to learn for the first time! I'm also experienced working with kids at all levels.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching private flute lessons while in college in Ohio, and really expanded my individual lesson techniques while living in Phoenix. In addition to teaching large groups of flute beginners and intermediate students within the band setting at a public elementary school, I also excel in teaching beginners individeually at whatever age. My favorite part of teaching is seeing the "spark" in a student's eyes when understanding is reached, and they can do something they were struggling with before.
METHODS USED
Materials: Flute: Rubank Elementary/Intermediate/Advanced Method, published by Hal Leonard, along with relevant supplemental materials (solos, pieces from student's school band, duet books, etc.) Piano: Alfred Beginning Piano Series    Philosophy: I believe in a collaborative approach between teacher and student. My style is based mostly in questions I ask of the student, asking them what they're thinking, feeling, and experiencing as they play certain passages or exercises. I believe in metacognitively working through the experience at an age-approrpriate level to master complete understanding of the musical instrument and the music itself.
LESSON STYLE
Lessons will feature a warm-up period, followed by review of material from previous lessons, playing of new material, and wrap-up with sightreading and assignments for next lesson. Students are often encouraged to self-evaluate and set their own level of rigor. I believe in a collaborative approach that involves questioning students and having students ask questions of themselves. More than having students be able to perform technically, I want students to have an understanding of music and their instrument intimately, from their own awareness, rather than rote explanation or practice.

Anita is an amazing teacher. I have no musical background and I was fortunate enough to be paired with Anita for my flute lessons. She is patient , encouraging and explains the technicalities really well.

Anita is a pleasure to have as a teacher. She adapts to my level, pushes me, and helps me get over it when I stumble. I am taking lessons after a 22 year pause of playing, and Anita is the exact person I needed to reintroduce me to this beautiful instrument: patient, lively, and supporting!

Anita is very knowledgeable about the flute and has a very unique and thorough teaching style that encourages the student to use their own creativity in practice.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
