Overview:
I am a full time professional musician who is passionate about providing for my students the very best in music instruction for piano, organ, or voice. I started teaching while in high school and have maintained music studios throughout the southeast for over 35 years. I am dedicated to continually improving my teaching skills and feel one of the greatest skills I can provide my students is teaching them how to perfect their practice skills, thus enabling them to become musicians who can function independently of studio instruction.Musically, technique, and creativity are hallmarks of my teaching style.
EXPERIENCE
I have taught all ages from 4 - 98. I emphasize a well-balanced diet of classical, popular, sacred, and jazz. Students' preferences are always taken into consideration. In addition, I provide students with a solid theoretical foundation. Concentration is upon functional theory that is applicable to where the student is in their music studies. Students are encouraged to explore their creativity whether it be improvisation on 12 bar blues patterns or composing in an ABA form. Ear training and music history are also included in lesson times. Sightreading is a vital part of our lesson times. Performance avenues are available to my students, whether it be festivals, auditions, recitals, or performances at local gatherings or retirement homes.
METHODS USED
Instruction methods are chosen according to the needs, abilities, and desires of the students. Instruction materials differ depending on the age of the student and the ability of the student. An emphasis on my part is exposing the student to material of the highest quality. This will often mean the exposure to some of the simpler classical pieces written by the great composers fairly early in their musical journey. I encourage a wide variety of material for each student.I also provide an extensive lending library for additional sightreading at home.
LESSON STYLE
I strive to maintain an organized and positive environment for my students. I present a warm, encouraging presence; I very seldom provide the answer for a student. Instead, I will lead them in asking a series of questions which will help them arrive at the correct answer. Even though I have high expectations of every student, I meet them where their ability level and interests are. It is very much of a partnership between me, as teacher, and the student, as an individual.
