Bachelor of Music, University of Central Florida, Flute Performance
I love music and love sharing that with my students. I am classically trained and spent 3 years at Crane School of Music in Potsdam, NY and finished my music performance degree at UCF in Florida. While at Crane, I doubled on flute and oboe and frequently played piccolo and English horn for concerts as well. I was originally in music education and have that background as well. I have previously taught beginning students both in the student's home as well as at my home. I performed with the Daytona State College wind ensemble as first chair flute/piccolo player for over 2 years.
I originally began teaching while in college teaching students on both flute and oboe. I began teaching students out of my home several years ago and taught for about 3 years until I moved and my students were not able to continue with me. I feel it is very important to have proper hand position and the proper way to play the instrument and initially spend time making sure these very basic foundations are correct, but have creative ways to help the students so they learn quickly and enjoy it as well! I have also worked with students as a group in a school setting during band time to help them learn their parts.
With beginning students, I have music that I have copied out of various beginning books for them to start learning. I use flash cards for the students to learn the notes and and what the different types of notes and rests look like. It is very important to learn songs instead of working on the boring basics and have very simple songs for the students to learn very soon after beginning so they can enjoy what they are learning. I have used the Rubank method for years for beginners. During the school year, I help the students learn their band or orchestral music as well. More advanced students will be learning appropriate music for their age and musical level and prepare them for competitions if this is something they are interested in doing.
My initial lesson with the student is to learn what they do and do not know and to establish proper playing and hand techniques. I interact with the students to learn what they enjoy playing and what they want to accomplish as well. It is very important to me to make music fun and interesting for them to learn. I spend the majority of the lesson going over what they were assigned the previous week and then the last part of the lesson is going over what I am assigning for the next lesson and playing some of the music so they can hear what it is supposed to sound like.
