Overview:
I am a life-long performer and teacher. I have been singing myself since I danced around the living room to my Dad playing the accordian and singing, and been studying voice and performance intensly since the age of 15. I attended the Crane School of Music and earned a Bachelors of Music in Voice, Music Education and Elementary Education and continued on to earn a Masters of Arts in Theatre at SUNY Albany in NY. Some of my career highlights include the many recitals I have crafted and performed with musical colleagues, singing in a NY opera program called American Singers' Opera Project, my debut at Carnegie Hall in 2012 and all those wordelss moments of connecting with an audience during songs. I am deeply passionate about teaching voice and feel that teaching is really my greatest gift. I have been teaching private voice for 18 years and am grateful each time I have the opportunity to contribute to someones musical growth.
EXPERIENCE
I have been taking voice lessons myself since the age of 15 and have been teaching since 17 when I was involved in a unique experience being mentored by my middle and high school choir directors as I knew I would be going on in Music Education as a college student. After graduating from my Bachelors program I began teaching both private voice and elementary-high school vocal and general music. Currently I have been teaching for 18 years as a private voice teacher. My students have had the opportunities to improve their technique, perform in studio master classes and recitals, audition for school and community programs, audition and attend music school in college and explore themselves through their voices. I believe that finding your voice is about more than music- it's about soul, and I am inspired and honored to help you do that!
METHODS USED
I specialize in teaching students from age 12 to adults. With a background in public school music, I am experienced both with the developing voice, and the demands of growing an instrument the right way when school focus on vocal development is limited. I teach classical vocal technique and work with students on all types of music, in different languages. I can help you develop a solid technique; teach you how to apply it to different styles; and coach you in interpretation. I have students moving on in music school at the conservatory level, and students who just enjoy singing in their school or community choirs and theatre groups.
LESSON STYLE
Each lesson begins with a chat while we gently stretch, breathe and prepare your body to sing. Singers are attached to their instrument and so getting your mind focused and getting comfortable in the singing space allows us to have as productive a lesson as we can. We work on vocalizes and technique next- to properly warm you up and strengthen your instrument. All of the vocalizing we do is then put to work in your repertoire, chosen by me and also including your preferences and anything you bring that you are currently working on. We move a lot, breathe and lot and laugh a LOT! I really enjoy knowing my students and developing a trusting and fun relationship where you can try things, make mistakes, learn from them and also question anything we're doing.
