I'm a musician who is as passionate about teaching as I am performing. I graduated from the University of Texas with an honors degree in Philosophy with a Music minor. Since then, I've been working as a performing musician and teacher, playing in various groups around town and at festivals.
I've been playing music from childhood, and have been teaching in studios since I was 16. I extended my practice to include home lessons when I graduated from college in 2011. While my primary instrument is guitar, I have also taught piano and bass. I aim to be an encouraging teacher and I tailor my curriculum to fit my students' musical goals. I love teaching both children and adults!
I create custom lesson plans depending on each student's musical background, stylistic preference, as well as age. For children I usually like to teach out of Hal Leonard's Guitar Method 1 and occasionally include songs they like/know as a reward for good work. For adults, it varies depending on their experience level and interests. When I teach, I try to teach not only how to physically play certain parts, but also how to think about music-- how the guitar player arrived playing that, why it works, and how to adopt similar things into one's own playing.
My teaching style is a positive and flexible one. I love children and approach teaching young children with a fun and patient outlook. I try to convey my love of music by making lessons a fun time for them, while also instilling discipline by rewarding good practice. I also really enjoy teaching adults, as you can get into the more theoretical and specific aspects of music. I aim to help my students' reach their musical goals.
