Overview:
My name is Annie Hoffman and I was born with an indescribable passion for music that I long to share with others who have a strong desire to learn! I have been playing violin for over 19 years performing in the San Diego Civic Youth Orchestra from 2000-2009 and then continuing onto Azusa Pacific University Symphony Orchestra, various chamber string ensembles, as well as playing in the Azusa Pacific University Choir and Orchestra Ensemble. In college I also studied piano, voice, and dabbled in organ and guitar.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching private lessons in college as a side job, but due to touring with orchestras I was unable to truly develop my own studio. I also volunteer taught students from low-income families through the Azusa Pacific Conservatory for two years. In the summers of 2010 and 2011, I took over a former teacher's studio of 20+ students while he toured in Europe. I have been working in National Parks for the past 3 years and have always brought my instruments with me. I would always happily teach friends lessons on the side. However, it was not really a focus. I am now back in San Diego area, having satiated the travel bug inside me. I am now focusing on working with new students in a casual but challenging way.
METHODS USED
Although I began my musical career in the Suzuki method, I intentionally balance the ear-training approach of that method with music theory to create well-rounded musicians. My students will learn how to sight read music, improvize their own melodies, perform in an ensemble (chamber and/or orchestral) and master the art of performance with a solid foundation in music theory. I generally start off with Suzuki repertoire for beginning students, but supplement that with scales, positions exercises, dexterity exercises, and sight-reading material. For adult students I follow a similar technique, but I will generally ask them what they want to learn about the instrument and go from there, allowing them to choose their repertoire if they wish.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is a balance between a music theory discipline mixed with what the student wants to learn of the instrument. I prefer and enjoy an environment that promotes expression of the student where we can learn from each other. I understand the uniqueness of each of my students and cater to their needs be it attention span, shyness, learning speeds, etc. Music is a discipline and a means for expression and that's what we will teach in my lessons. I expect my younger students to practice a minimum of 30 minutes a day and 12+ years to be practicing 1+ hours a day.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
