I am an instructor of of ten years and I have loved every moment of it. I started playing guitar at the end of high school and I decided then and there that is what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I Went to Fresno City Community College in California and earned my AA and AM degrees in classical guitar. Being excited about 16-19th century music I moved to Irvine and received a BM and an MFA in Lute and 19th century Guitar. I have played and taught all around the country from Fresno and the Orange county area in California to Saint Louis, Missouri where I taught and performed with the Saint Louis Classical Guitar Society.
Since I began my career as a musician in 2009 I have taught the guitar. I have taught private and group lessons for ten years and I have guest lectured and instructed university music theory classes at the University of California at Irvine. I have taught Guitar, Lute and Ukulele at advanced levels. I was an instructor for the Saint Louis Classical Guitar Society that helped classroom teachers learn the guitar, implement guitar programs during and after school, and helped teach the classes along side them.
With this in mind I have every student choose something they wish to be able to do (i.e. play like specific performers, a style they enjoy, or just to relax). We then set milestone markers that include everything they need to know, such as technique, reading, musicality, etiquette, and performance. I enjoy using "Solo Guitar Playing" as a preferred book for both beginners and intermediate students. Although the book materials are used to have a reference to exercises and technique training, all music is selected specifically for the student.
I want to see all of my students grow in the direction in which they wish to grow. I want students to learn what they wish to learn, and I provide a set of goal posts that guide the student to play with a combination of technique and musicality. The greatest thing I emphasize to a student is trying to play music in their own voice. The most fun in music is to interpret and improvise on music no matter what the genre. In the end, music should be fun, and I wish to instill in my students the same amount of joy that I derive from creating music with and for others.
