Overview:
I am 29 years old and have been playing music since I was 9 and actively playing in bands since age 15. Starting with classic rock and blues, I slowly began to encompass a wide variety of styles into my playing, like funk and reggae. I graduated from Wake Forest University in 2013 and actively played jazz with the music program in addition to having an independent student band. After graduating, I moved to Spain for a year and played acoustic guitar all over the country. In Memphis, I actively play bass and guitar in multiple music projects. I write the music, book the shows, manage funds, and started a music publishing company. I view music as an enjoyable and relaxing outlet that ANYONE is capable of doing, all you need is patience. I've been a full time working musician since 2017 and it's been an amazing experience.
EXPERIENCE
I first began giving lessons 7 years ago to family friends and have continued to give lessons since then. In college, I gave lessons to other students on campus. When I moved to Spain, I was a language instructor in addition to teaching music to students at the school. Spreading knowledge of music has always been a passion of mine because music is already such an important part of many people's lives. Watching students make progress and enjoy the process is very rewarding to me. I've continued giving lessons in Memphis to anyone who needs it and has a love for music.
METHODS USED
For beginning students, I usually customize the material at the start so it can be more understandable. Some instructor's booklets can be confusing, so I just want to explain is as simply as possible and that may vary from student to student (everyone is different). For more advanced students (on bass and guitar), I use Chris Kemp's Journey to Planet Guitar. It contains everything a musician needs to know, presented in an innovative, easy way. Once there is a general understanding of music as a whole, I ask the students how they want to proceed with their newfound knowledge.
LESSON STYLE
I approach teaching in a universal way before specializing on a student's particular interest within music. I try to provide students with a road map so they can determine where they want to go musically. I do this by introducing various styles and techniques that they may not have heard before. Through the years, I've found that this allows students to get out of their comfort zones and learn new rythms they didn't know before. From there, the student decides what they want to pursue. The genres I'm best at are rock, blues, funk, jazz, reggae and everything in-between.
