I am a very patient and motivated instructor. I really enjoy working with students from beginners to advanced sharing my love of music. I was born and raised in Brazil (Recife) which I have a very good knowledge about all the folkloric rhythms from Brazil. I have been playing playing drums since I was 13 years old but I started taking formal lessons at the age of 16. In 1998, I studied at Musicians Institute in Los Angeles and in 2005 I studied at Drummers Collective in New York City. I have a vast experience as a musician from studio to tours and also teaching privately.
My teaching experience dates back to when I was back in Brazil, teaching privately young students and also adults. Here in New York, I have been teaching privately as well as writing various articles to drum magazines such as Modern Drummer Magazine, Drum! and recently I have a column in Drumhead Magazine called Brazilian Beat. I am a very all around drummer and teacher being exposed, researched and performed many different styles of music, not only Brazilian enabling me to pass along some knowledge in many different types of music.
My method of teaching for beginning students is I try to feel what are the aspirations and goals of the student and try to fit a method that he/she will develop his musical skills and at the same time have fun doing it. I have various book methods I can choose from to apply. For adults, I find out what are the aspirations and what the student is looking for to gain in his lessons. Upon that, I make a set program which I find important for them to reach those goals. Of course, it has to be a fun class so the student always feels inspired to continue improving.
It is very important to make each student progress at his or her own pace. This is done by setting realistic goals for each student at each lesson, keeping them inspired and interested in learning more. When you acknowledge students based on their accomplishments, it helps to fuel them a desire to progress and make them interested in learning more. Finding out what are his/her inspirations it makes it easier to fit my instruction to their wants and needs. Also, making them aware that drums can be a very musical instrument and how important it is to have musical ears in order to make them so valuable in a band/orchestra setting.
