Overview:
I am an experienced musician with a background in teaching percussion and drums. In the Spring of 1993, I graduated from Parson's School of design in New York, where I primarily studied Jazz and Afro-Cuban music. I am a very motivating and passionate music instructor who enjoys sharing my love of music and instruments. I have a strong knowledge of various drumming styles, including swing, samba, bosa-nova, rock, and funk. I have used my knowledge of music to instruct students in learning to play trap drums, congas, bongos, and timbales. Lastly, I am very passionate about teaching, and I am a patient and respectful instructor.
EXPERIENCE
My passion for music and instruments dates back far more then I could remember. From a very young age, I have loved the idea and bringing joy into people's lives through music. For me, music has always been a means of expression, a way to express my love, passion, and commitment to life and this world. I enjoy all different types of music, however, I am a purist, and I have found that R&B as well as Merengue and Salsa are a few of the ones I enjoy teaching and learning about. As a music instructor and connoisseur, I understand that my calling is not just to teach, but to also learn from each and every one of my students.
METHODS USED
One of the many ways I begin a lesson with a student is by asking them what type of music they enjoy listening to and playing. Once we have this initial discussion, I begin to build the foundation for the lesson plan and my teaching. For example, if a student mentions they enjoy playing Rock and Roll, I will begin with that particular style and simplify it for them. As a music instructor, I like to listen to my students play and then address the areas that need to be addressed with them. I demonstrate the lessons slowly and let the student understand and complete their musical tasks. This process applies to every musical style. Because there are numerous musical styles and varieties that exist, the idea is to teach according to the student's level from beginning, to advanced, and in between.
LESSON STYLE
The most rewarding thing that happens in the development of musical skills and a teaching relationship, is when a student develops a love of music and their instrument of choice. In my years of experience, I come to the understanding that each student is different and their progress depends on themselves. As a result, I always encourage my students to set goals for themselves that are realistic, but that will also challenge them in a productive manner. When students are able to set forth their own individual goals, I have noticed that they are more eager and passionate about their learning. As their instructor, I assist students in creating said goals, but most importantly, I try to tailor my lessons in a way that helps my students remain inspired while promoting their own growth and fulfillment of their goals. I am also very conscious of the fact that I must teach and appropriately address every single aspect of what students are learning.
