MM, Longy School of Music, Flute Performance BM, Northern Arizona University, Flute Performance Teaching Artist Certified Trained in Body Mapping
Overview:
I have picked up and loved the flute for 13 years, and I wish to share this passion and creativity with students. I have had the opportunity to study under Emily McKay and Marco Granados, as well as perform in masterclasses with Trevor Wye, William Bennett, and Lorna Mcghee. As a recent Denver citizen, I wish to grow my roots as a teacher who fosters flute playing as a fun and outside-the-box activity.
EXPERIENCE
I have started teaching private lessons since high school through the Suzuki Method, and into my college and graduate school years. I have taken classes on pedagogy and teaching artistry in creative ways, such as teaching students to do improvisations and asking questions in order to get them engaged in the learning process. I have played classical, jazz, pop, and latin music, and can teach an array of different genres. I believe music contributes to a well-rounded individual, and will gladly accept students of all experiences and ages. My teaching philosophy will vary based on each student's needs; however, my goal will to always keep the student engaged and having fun!
METHODS USED
For beginner students, I try to get them to learn a song by the first lesson. Eventually, I start them off by focusing on technique (learning notes and scales), tone development, etudes, and repertoire. Efficiency of effort in the fingers, usage of air, and holding of the body in order to produce a beautiful sound is a top priority. I believe the connection between the mind and body is very important, and you will find me often asking questions to engage the students in being aware of what they are doing as they are playing. I will gauge the different exercises and repertoire needed depending on the skill level of the student.
LESSON STYLE
I love helping students succeed, and for them to feel a sense of accomplishment as well as having a good time while playing the flute. I try to make every lesson something exciting to look forward to, leaving them wanting to practice before every lesson, whether it be learning a new piece, improvisations, singing, or any new activities to mix it up. I consider myself as a guide, and not someone that pushes or dictates students. It will always be my interest to create a positive, kind, genuine, fun, and creative atmosphere during a lesson. You will always see my flute out, ready to play with students!
