Overview:
I have spent the past three years living in Miami where I completed my Masters Degree in music education. During this time I was an active trumpet player in south Florida playing with orchestras, brass bands, jazz groups, and quite regularly latin bands due to the popularity of salsa/latin styles in that region. My Bachelors degree was completed in 2006 at the Univeristy of Delware. I completed their music teacher preparation program, participating in both educational studies and a wide range of music ensembles including wind band, brass choir, marching band, and jazz band.
EXPERIENCE
I have taught in a variety of musical settings with a wide range of students and abilities. I have taught independently as well as for organizations such as the Youth Orchestra of Central NJ. In 2012 I worked for Camp Encore Coda where I taught trumpet lessons, directed the Symphonic Band, coached jazz combos, and taught music theory/musicianship class. My experience working as full time music faculty for Camp Encore Coda sparked my graduate research on overnight summer music camp, which has since been presented at three major professional conferences in the music education field at the state, national, and international level.
METHODS USED
I believe every student develops at their own pace and has their own ways of learning. As a teacher I strive to discover with the student the most effective ways to practice so that musical goals are obtained in a way that is engaging and exciting for the student. This includes using different approaches to developing technique and the use of different styles of music depending on the student's interests. There are several credible method books I like to incorporate into lessons: Clark technical studies, Goldman Etudes, and Arbans. For the beginning and advanced students I combine personal customized lesson plans with musical selections that interest the student and provide opportunity for musical development.
LESSON STYLE
I am passionate about trumpet and music and hope to inspire and motivate my students through engaging lessons. I always play my trumpet in lessons with my students. I encourage them to listen to/attend live and recorded concerts as frequently as possible to stimulate their enjoyment for the numerous possibilities that exist in music. I assist in creating performance opportunities for my students and even perform alongisde them if they desire. I believe in establishing solid fundamentals. This inclused the physical parts of playing the instrument and basic musicnaship.
