I'm a dedicated guitarist, going on just over forty years of experience playing for fun and as a career. Having been raised among musicians in the family, my start in music was ultimately a destiny of many different and exciting opportunities as a performer as well as teacher and instructor. I began to study classical guitar as a young boy and since then, I have given my life to the guitar! I practice many of the excercises that i were taight to me by my first guitar teacher. So for me, practice is a way of life. Creating music and composing has been a delightful journey. I've always loved original music. I feel very lucky that I can share my craft and skills with my students. Music is a powerful tool. Enjoy it!
My teaching style is very specialized. As a guitar teacher, I started teaching group classes as a volunteer when I was a teenager. Eventually I started teaching guitar to fellow classmates. At this point I was already playing guitar for seven years. In my late teens I began to teach at a few highly regarded music shoppes in Chicago. Soon after, I was a faculty member at the world famous OldTown School of Folk Music teaching beginner and intermediate group classes and advanced classical guitar and chord chemistry classes as well. I have a strong background in the fingerpicking style so I naturally gravitate towards the acoustic guitar. But my teaching style overall has more to do with expression and feel. Developing control with both hands. Understanding the importance of intonation. And most importantly, listening to your instrument. Afterall, music is how we hear sounds we like. Over time, how we listen will help us play better to further our ability as musicians.
My methods vary depending on the background and interests of the student. Typically I shy away from tabs since I read music notation. I do recommend learning the basics of reading music for anyone who is thinking of self study in their short or long-term commitment to any instrument. I usually suggest to the parent or student, that they research method books for guitar basics. Many times, a family member or friend will have a method book that will be more than suffice if it is a standard method book. I tend to like the average guitar method book for it will usually consists of the fundamentals of music as well as left and righthand technique and also songs and pieces that are a part of the development process. My favorite courses are by Julio Sagreras and Fernando Sor for classical. Otherwise Gibson Guitar methods are excellent for a variety of levels and styles. I also like to write out lessons as well. Ultimately, I want to enable good habits of learning!
As a student of acoustic guitar, I was never more excited to learn a new piece of music the day of my lesson. I was very eager to learn. So as a teacher, learning from your students is also very important because their approach has to be handled appropriately. There are many ways to encourage a student. But understanding how to tailor a lesson is crucial to the growth of the student and development of their sound. I like to leave my student with a feeling that he or she can learn even more than they ever imagined. It is very important that I inspire my students to grow as guitarist, musicians and as artists.
