BA, Northwestern University
I was born in Moscow, Russia, and moved to the United States as a child in the early 1970's. He studied violin and music composition at the New England Conservatory, Interlochen Arts Academy, the Tanglewood Institute, and Northwestern University. I have over 30 years of experience teaching and performing, playing concert halls such as Vienna's Musikverein and Boston's Symphony Hall. I am currently based in Los Angeles, California. I am the founder of Tournesol Records, and releases his own music under the name 'Man Over Matter'.
It is important to pass on the education and experience I received. In my opinions, this is a duty of the artist. So I have always tried to share what has been given to me. I have had both formal and ad hoc students over the years. Although I've taught other subjects, such as theater and computer science, music is my metier, so it is the subject I am most fond of and love to teach the most. These days students are very interested in production techniques. Such techniques can also be part of our lesson plan.
Classes are customized per the student's individual needs. For some students, this means a standard repertoire: Schradiek, Scevcik, Hrimaly for violin. Hanon for piano. But for others, they would do better with a less formal approach. In all cases, the use of the ear is fundamental and primal. We will learn how to hear, and how to listen for timbres and intervals. (Basic interval training will be a part of everyone's lesson, as there's really no way around that.) Some students are intimidated by the classical repertoire, and the demands the classical tradition places on musicians. This need not be a deterrent! The classical tradition is not for everyone. I teach punk rock, too!
My style is closer to the Russian style than to the American style. This tends to involve more discipline, an emphasis on focus and concentration, and a more direct communicative approach. I don't usually mince words, although I am very supportive and gentle. My students seldom suffer self-confidence problems, because we are always too concerned with improving ourselves. We identify and focus on the task at hand. This is not for everyone, but for those that prefer this style, there is no substitute.
