Bachelor Degree: Lipscomb University
I am a working private brass instructor in the middle Tennessee area. I am currently studying Music Education at Lipscomb University and previously taught lessons at Middle Tennessee Christian School. I am currently the intern of the Nashville Trombone Academy where my responsibilities include rehearsal coordination, demonstration, content creation, and management of our online presence. As far as performance experience, I have done a little bit of everything. I have performed in music videos, recording sessions, classical concerts, chamber ensembles, marching band, and even in the horn section of a rock band. I work in and around the Nashville area and live exposing my students to what all that can offer.
I have been teaching private lessons since I began pursuing my degree! I have taught ages ranging from beginning band (5th & 6th grade) all the way to late high school (juniors and seniors). I am well versed in all brass instruments and have been playing for almost ten years. I encourage my students to look at music through a different lense, it’s not like school or competition, it’s about finding an inner skill and becoming a well-rounded, kind musician. Being a musician can teach us more about our time, lives, and interactions with others than any other profession. I’ve played in a variety of environments including music videos, recording sessions, wind ensembles, orchestras, symphonies, and chamber groups. I wish for and teach my students to be well-rounded because I know the benefits from my own experiences. I also encourage my students to be honest with themselves and their peers in order to build trust in their instincts and musical ability.
Though I adapt my approach and conversation techniques for all of my students, my underlying philosophy is the same for every student I’ve ever taught. The philosophy is that progress is what we’re striving for, not perfection. I assess the skill and technical abilities and grow from that point. Moving forward is the goal, as a person, student, musician, and even my ability as a teacher. I also learn from my students which pushes me towards progress as well. Effort and progress is all I ask of my students.
My teaching style is dependent on the student. For some assigning certain things to practice and having the student keep track is a good motivator, for others it’s just asking them to look at the music. Motivations are different for every student and teacher. I always provide positive reinforcement to known work and effort, but I am also honest when it is obvious effort hasn’t been put in to the work assigned. I always discuss the goals of that week with my student to make sure what I’m asking isn’t unreasonable, that way the student has an opportunity to tell me if my expectations are too high, low, etc.
