Hello, my name is Arterus, I go by Art or Arty. I am a senior Music Media Production major at Ball State University in Muncie, IN. I am originally from Evansville, IN. In high school I was very active in marching band and choir, and it where I first got my passion for music. I have experience in many different style of singing and love working with other musicians. After college, my goal is to be a recording engineer and teach solo voice lessons in my free time. Outside of music, I love to travel and hang out with my friends. I
My teaching experience started last year when I took a vocal pedagogy class, it gave me the knowledge and confidence to give positive and helpful feedback to all levels of singers. I have had one student so far, and we focused on classical music. I have taken voice lessons in classical music throughout college, along with singing in our concert choir and our tenor bass choir, the Statesmen, for 3 years. Out of school, I am the music director of an all male acapella group, "Note to Self." This will be my second year in this position and I am so excited to keep making music with these guys in the coming school year. We sing in a variety of genres of music. I play piano and sing in a jam band with a group of my good friends, we play music like Steely Dan and Grateful Dead. In my free time I write and produce my own music, I love making pop and rnb jams. I have gotten a lot of experience in many genres of music and love getting to make music in so many different ways!
My method is to build a solid repertoire list in whatever style of music the student prefers, and then work to a clear understanding of the characteristics necessary to sing in that style. I love having conversation with students to get to know them and find ways the music can relate to them. It also helps me make my teaching more relatable to them. I try to give all my students at least one piece of classical music to broaden their horizons and also to use the techniques they are learning in a different way. Usually the piece is either an English or Italian piece. I also like to give specific practice strategies and skills unique to each student based on the things they can improve on.
My teaching style is focused around making sure my students feel comfortable. I try to always bring a positive and supportive envoirnment into our space. In the first lesson I usually give a set of ways to practicing that I believe will help each student succeed. This will include warm-ups, ways to go over a challenging section of a piece, and ways to improve overall technique. You should come to each less prepared and ready to work. I expect all students to have copies of music, a pencil, accompaniment in whatever form approved, and a good attitude! :)
