BA, Luther College, Spanish & music (piano)
2011-2014- Luther College Music Scholarship 2016- Performed with Hidalgo State University, Mineral del Monte, Mexico
I’m an energetic and positive piano teacher who is very passionate about musical education. Sharing my love of piano and working with students is one of my greatest joys. I started to play piano under my father’s instruction at age 6, and have been studying it ever since. When I was 14, I started making my first musical compositions and arrangements. Since then composition, alongside piano, have been my preferred methods of self-expression. I graduated from college in December 2014 with a BA in Spanish and music. I lived for on year in Mexico with a Fulbright grant, and gave piano lessons in Spanish while I was there. I ended my time in Mexico by giving a recital at the university where I had worked, performing 11 original compositions. Back in the U.S., I’m looking to share once again my knowledge and love for piano, music theory, and composition through giving music lessons.
At age 15 I began to give my first piano lessons, opening a studio in my home. During college I put giving piano lessons on hold so I could focus on improving my skills as a musician. I gave piano lessons in Spanish while I lived in Mexico, but now that I’m back in the U.S. I am opening my studio once again. My students study not only piano technique and performance, but also music theory, and if desired, ear training and musical composition. I create a positive learning environment by getting to know my students and understanding their individual needs. Having fun while sitting down at the keys is encouraged as much as a regular practice schedule, keeping a healthy balance between getting your work done and smiling while doing it.
My preferred set of piano books is Bastien Piano Basics, by James Bastien. Students will study three individual books- piano (study of short songs), technique (study of finger exercises, scales, key signatures, etc), and theory (basics of music theory). These books go hand-in-hand to create complete weekly lessons. Solo repertoire will also be selected every 2-3 months so students can broaden their musical knowledge and gain experience in playing different styles. Any ear training will be done during lesson time, and experimenting with improvisation and composition will be encouraged for practice time at home.
I have worked with hundreds of different students during my time as a piano teacher, English teacher, and Spanish teacher. I understand that a student’s unique personality affects their learning style. By getting to know my students I will tailor lessons to their individual needs, and make learning music as fun and efficient as possible. Constant encouragement, a positive learning environment, and goal setting are the core of my teaching style, while having fun, being motivated, and becoming more confident are the great side effects!
