Teaching has always been a passion of mine! In 2019, I graduated from University of Central Arkansas with my Bachelor of Music Education. From there, I earned a Graduate Certificate in Trombone Performance from the University of Central Arkansas in 2020. Finally in May 2023, I earned my Master of Music in Trombone Performance with a secondary area in Music Education. I have experiences teaching in several settings: elementary classes, middle school classes, and private lessons from 6th grade all the way up to college students. I also have been able to perform all over the country at two International Trombone Festivals, two International Women’s Brass Conferences, the Midwest Band Clinic, and Carnegie Hall.
I have been teaching students younger than me since I was in the 8th grade. I began professionally teaching when I began college in 2015. Currently, I teach students from schools involved in TMEA and ATSSB. My students have had success in All Region auditions, Area auditions, and solo and ensemble. I also encourage my in person students to participate in our annual studio recital, where they will play a solo in front of a live audience. I have helped students prepare for several auditions for school band activities, as well as for college auditions for music degree programs (UCA, UNT, UT-Arlington).
I teach my students to practice a growth mindset. As musicians, I find that we can easily become perfectionists. While I think it is important to critique ourselves so we can improve, my policy is that my students critique themselves based on their own progress. For example, instead of comparing themselves to other students at an audition, I encourage them to compare themselves to who they were yesterday. I truly believe that students can more easily reach their full potential when they are focused on growth rather than competition against others.
I begin the first lesson with each student by listening to their goals. All of my students are individuals with different experiences and therefore, I tailor our lesson material to each student’s needs. In my lessons, I set my students up for success in their practice sessions. I expect that all of my students will practice outside of their lessons, and I work on making sure students will not have questions on how to practice their material. We work on proper practice techniques, as well as skills that need improvement for each student (tone, pitch, rhythm, range, dynamic range, musical decisions).
Very helpful and kind :)
I learned a lot from Mrs. Ashley, she is the best private I've had to date. She very patient and kind but will also be honest on where you are on your instrument. I think those qualities are what make an amazing music teacher. Thank you Mrs. Ashley
I had the privilege of learning trombone from an amazing teacher! Their expertise and patience created a supportive learning environment. Every lesson was tailored to my progress, making the journey enjoyable. I now feel confident and grateful for the valuable skills gained. Five stars without a doubt!
Amazing teacher and trombone player
