2011 and 2012- Performed with Allen Vizzutti and other notable musicians at the Western International Band Clinic 2012-2016 - Performed with the BYU Symphonic Band
Overview:
I'm a quietly passionate instructor motivated by my love of music and my students. In 2016, I graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Arts in English, with a Minor in Music. As an undergrad, I often found my love of music creeping into my major coursework-- including my thesis! I've loved practicing and performing for over a decade (which is also more than half of my life!). From receiving my very first "Band Student of the Month" award in the fifth grade to helping soon-to-be-fifth graders achieve that goal themselves, I cannot express how much I love this instrument and the opportunities it has provided.
EXPERIENCE
I first began teaching private lessons as a summer job while still a teenager in high school, and I've loved teaching ever since. Encouraging a love of the instrument (and music in general) in younger students is something I'm very passionate about, but I'm always willing to help older students find that love as well. I find that the best way to ignite that interest is to focus on the type of music the student is most interested in. Of course, we must learn the basics, but there's no rules saying that the basics have to be boring!
METHODS USED
For young beginners, I recommend starting with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements for Band. Once the student has grasped the fundamentals, we will introduce solo pieces appropriate for the child's skill level and purposes (preparing for a performance vs learning for fun, for example). For older students, we will work quickly to establish a firm knowledge of the fundamentals before moving on to more complex pieces based on the student's interests. For all students, the most important thing to me is that lessons are enjoyable yet productive in achieving notable progress.
LESSON STYLE
Practice doesn't make perfect; PERFECT practice makes perfect! The best way to develop a skill is to work consistently and carefully, which is why I encourage all of my students not just to practice until they get it right, but to practice until they can't get it wrong. That being said, students must work at their own pace for this method to be effective. Together, the student and I will set realistic goals at each lesson, allowing the student to feel a personal responsibility in achieving progress. By listening to the student's goal for where they would like to be, I can better tailor my instruction to their needs, and properly congratulate them when accomplishments are achieved!
