I am a recent graduate from The Juilliard School. I have performed with orchestras around the Tri-State area, and made my debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 2013. I have performed in masterclasses across Europe and America with such teachers as James Galway, Julien Beaudiment, Denis Bouriakov, Marina Piccinini, Philippe Bernold, Jim Walker, Karl-Heinz Schütz, and Jill Felber. In 2019, I performed in Carnegie Hall as principal flutist of the New York String Orchestra. I have participated in the BU Tanglewood Institute Young Artists Orchestra and the Texas Festival Orchestra at the Round Top Festival Institute. At Juilliard, I have performed in Alice Tully Hall with the Juilliard Orchestra, the New Juilliard Ensemble, the AXIOM ensemble. In my free time, I participate in community outreach through benefit concerts and as a member of the United Nations Chamber Music Society, the United Nations’ charity chamber music series that raises money for the United Nations Refugee Fund.
I have always loved teaching, and have taught students of all ages and levels over the course of the past six years. I believe that the most important aspect of learning music is inspiration; music should always be enjoyable, first and foremost. I teach a combination of popular and classical repertoire, to ensure that the student has a balance between growing their appreciation for classical music and playing things purely for fun. I am able to tailor my teaching to any level, so we can work together to ensure that the student is achieving their goals.
For beginners, I start with the basics of sound production, and move onto reading music and basic songs shortly after. I try to teach things both visually and by ear, so that the student does not feel that they have to wait to play fun music until they are advanced enough. I believe in a strong base of music theory (scales, arpeggios, understanding intervals), so that the student can use their musical knowledge in many subject areas. For students that are older or more advanced, I cater my teaching technique to fit the student's goals, whether that is to treat music as a serious pursuit or a more relaxed hobby.
I believe that studying music has value far beyond simply learning an instrument. I hope that my students are inspired by music, and really feel the freedom to treat it as a creative outlet. Additionally, practicing consistently teaches discipline. Even for beginners, it is better to practice for 10 minutes every day than four hours once a week. I try to be as encouraging as possible, and will also provide opportunities for students to play with others or perform for friends/family. The most important thing is that the student is learning vital skills in a way that is exciting and engaging.
