2015 - Kansas Teacher of Promise
Overview:
I began teaching music in 2010 as a high school senior. I quickly began to love it and decided to make it my career. I have taught K-12 grade music as well as a private clarinet and saxophone studio before realizing that I wanted to get back to performing and growing my studio. I moved to Fayetteville and started my masters at the University of Arkansas. I have performed with the Hutchinson Community Band, Lindsborg Community Band, Lindsborg Community Orchestra, Christian Youth Theatre of Wichita, Hutchinson Community Theatre, Dodge City Cowboy Band and many more college level ensembles. I also perform the National Anthem for the National Junior College Basketball Tournament Championship game.
EXPERIENCE
I love working with students and helping them discover their love of music. I love working with students of all ages. My individual approach to teaching allows me to find, and help students with their individual needs. I will focus on technique while developing the artist within through lessons that are fun, and engaging. Lessons start with a warm-up that I have designed based on input from nationally renown soloists and teachers on Saxophone and Clarinet as well as my own experiences as a professional player and teacher, followed by etude work from one of the many books that I can recommend at the first lesson and wrapping up with the solo literature that we are studying at the time.
METHODS USED
I believe every person's needs are different making the books and pieces that I recommend different for each student. But, teaching materials in my studio include etude and study books, exercises written by myself to target specific needs and standard solo repertoire that I believe every saxophone or clarinetist should play. Students will also be requested to keep a journal either electronically or on paper with short notes about practice sessions from each day, to help guide goals and instruction in each lesson.
LESSON STYLE
Setting goals and tracking progress are essential to learning an instrument. I will work with the student to set goals for each lesson and show them great ways to track their progress as they practice throughout the week. Lessons are very highly structured and focused on helping the students grow as much as possible. While practicing is important and should be done daily to maximize progress, studying with a teacher that knows the instrument will only help the progress go even faster. That is what I try to provide to all of my students.
