I started learning piano in first grade. I learned music theory, and it helped me learn other instruments quickly. In Middle School, I learned violin very quickly because I had the fundamentals down. After high school, my parents wanted me to have a financially stable career. I studied business in college, but ended up becoming a Middle School teacher. Not only did I teach math, I was also their music teacher for their after school music teacher. I taught my students how to read music and how to play instruments. By the end of the school year, the students who were from 9-14 years old performed our own concert at California State University, East Bay. On my free time, I have also recorded music covers on my own, and jam with friends. Playing music is a great way to relax, and have fun! My goal is to share this skill and excitement to you!
I like to start by teaching all of the students music theory before we play any instruments. In the real world, you cannot read a book properly if you do not know the "ABC's". I strongly believe the same goes with music. Once we learn the fundamentals of music theory, learning songs, and other instruments will become a lot easier. Once we have the music theory settled down, we will play books. These books are designed to have students start off with easier pieces and gets harder as we move on. It is up to the students to practice in order for them to get better! From here, the next part is to find songs that students want to learn. Many people prefer teaching students classical music, because it is rigorous, well respected, and will allow them to excel. However, I am a person that prefers a student to pick songs that they enjoy or a songs that they are motivated to practice! What makes me special is that I have the software that can help students modify their pieces so that they can learn almost any song at their perfect level of rigor. This way, the student has something that they look forward to practicing! That is how you make music enjoyable!
I like to teach at the student's pace or what their parents have in mind. When I learned piano, my parents wanted me to learn at a high pace, and forced me to rush everything. As a result, I was able to play a lot of pieces, but the quality of the songs were not the best. I ended up slowing down and spent time to actually work on the tiny details of each song. As a result, people can hear the difference in the pieces that I play. On the other hand, if the student was super motivated and was able to learn everything quickly, I can assess them, and work at their speed. My goal is to not only have students play a song, but to have them play at a level where they can perform it professionally!
