BA, McNally Smith College of Music, Music Business
As an instructor and an artist, I look up to those who do what they love for a living and that is what motivates me to do what I love. I take pride in all the work that I do and never settle for less when it comes to being creative and innovative. In the spring of 2014, I graduated from McNally Smith College of Music with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Business. I love playing the drums solo, with small groups, or even in a large orchestral setting. Throughout my school career I have always been heavily involved in playing in bands, writing music, playing live shows locally and on tour, as well as recording drums in studio.
I began teaching drum lessons part time when I was a sophomore in college. I taught a diverse group of students of all ages and with different skill levels out of a small musical instrument store. I also taught percussion to groups of middle and high school students helping them prepare for concerts and district solo and ensemble competitions. I quickly learned that students all have very different musical interests and reasons for learning how to play the drums. I enjoy getting to know my students and learning what their personal musical goals are. I feel a great sense of accomplishment whenever I see my students progress and have fun learning to play music that they truly enjoy. I am always looking for new students who will be enthusiastic and excited to learn with me!
With a new student I always start by getting to know their abilities and experience with the drums or any other musical instrument up to this point and then go from there. With someone starting out with no experience I begin with basic match-grip technique, striking the drum, and some basic counting to get the fundamentals down. I generally use George Lawrence Stone’s Stick Control for the Snare Drummer to introduce various sticking patterns and the upstroke/downstroke concept. After the basics I help the student decide what kind of musical direction they would like to take.
Have fun, learn at your own pace, learn music you enjoy, practice often, and HAVE FUN!
