Overview:
I am a classically trained flutist with a preference for French Romanticism, Modern/Contemporary pieces, and Baroque works. I graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts in French and Music, focusing on flute performance. I am currently enrolled in the Master of Music in Music Education program at William Paterson University and am projected to receive my degree in May. Additionally I play the alto saxophone, on which I am mostly self taught. I offer music lessons to students of all ages and experience levels in their homes, regardless of whether this is a student's first instrument or not.
EXPERIENCE
I started teaching in college when I was a tutor in the mathematics and music departments as well as at an after school program in the neighboring town. After graduating I started teaching private music lessons in a variety of settings. I try to keep my lessons interesting and informative so that the student learns without getting bored. I am a patient, kind, and understanding teacher to students of all ages. Lessons include a mixture of classical and pop music as well as both sheet music and aural learning when needed or requested.
METHODS USED
For students who are learning an instrument for band or marching band, I like to integrate their sheet music or method books into the lesson. I use method books with students who are new to their instrument. These materials are then supplemented with scales, solo repertoire, exercises, and technique work as appropriate for each student's interest and skill level. Lessons also consist of listening to previous assignments/repertoire from prior weeks and then offering feedback, answering any questions a student may have, and giving new assignments for the next lesson.
LESSON STYLE
My lessons are student driven and customized to each student. I take a student's musical background and goals into consideration when coming up with the lesson plan for each lesson. I aspire to find a balance between challenging my students without frustrating or overwhelming them and giving them reasonably reached goals with them getting bored. I make sure to acknowledge their success and offer positive feedback when they do well. However I also offer corrections in a way that keeps them motivated to learn. My overall teaching philosophy is that music and music lessons should be fun, positive, encouraging, and rewarding.
