Overview:
Before I made the decision to become a vocalist, I have always wanted to work with students and support their artistic goals and dreams. In 2012, I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in musical theater. Immediately after, I started my own business as a voice teacher for my classmates as well as other residents in Hollywood, CA. I also performed with an ensemble called Orphius Rising for various events throughout Los Angeles. After a year, I decided to teach for an elementary school in DC and bring my talent as a voice teacher to my own community.
EXPERIENCE
I am an American singer/songwriter based in the DC/MD area. Ayana was born and raised in southern Maryland until the age of 9 where she became a D.C. resident. This up and coming R&B artist has been skilled in many different genres of music during her high school and college years. In training with her high school music teacher in 2008, Ayana became a fan of classical music which carried her to a performing arts college in New York City. After two years of classical training, along with dance, theatre, and speech, she continued her education and performed in multiple venues in Los Angeles. In 2012, she received her BFA in musical theatre and started training her fellow college friends in vocal performance as well as musical theater. In 2013, Ayana moved back to the east cost as a elementary school teacher and continued to teach others in the DC and Maryland area.
METHODS USED
I always start by just hearing my students sing. I listen for the breathe that they use, where the voice is placed and the tone of the voice. If they sound as though that they could delve into a different genre as well as the genre they choose, I would give them an option to see if one genre feels just as comforting as the other. As well as noting, the level as to which they should be placed to get the maximum challenge they need to reach their goals as a singer, a recording artist, or a performer.
LESSON STYLE
I love to see the progression of my students. It gives me more ideas of what is effective for them and what needs to be modified for them. I want my students to use me as support system in finding their own style that they desire to hewn in on. Weather it be jazz, R&B, opera, gospel or soul, I let my students pick a song that they love to sing or would like to sing then I help them determine they style that works best for them. Most of the time, when I am working with a student, the songs that they love to sing or perform the most, is always related to something in their everyday life.
