William Paterson Music Scholar Award 2018-2019
Hi! My name is Peter. I'm a drum set/percussion, cello, and piano instructor. I grew up in a very musical family, my father is an opera singer and drum set player, my mother is a conductor and piano teacher, and my brother is a violinist and pianist, so you can see why I've grown up to play all three instruments! I have recently moved to the New Jersey / New York music scene from Arizona to pursue my performance and teaching goals. Within the first year living in New Jersey, I've had the great opportunity to play drums for Lil' Kim (alongside Brian McKnight, Musiq Soul Child, Faith Evans, Mario, Jon B., Jagged Edge, etc.) at Barclays Center in front of thousands of people! I've also had the pleasure to feature in a film sponsored by CaliArts as a main character who plays the role of a drummer.
I have taught students for about 5 years and it has become one of my greatest passions. I've worked with all age groups from toddlers to the elderly, as well as a wide range of skilled students from beginner to advanced. I am currently teaching in my home studio and I also drive to my students' homes for lessons. In my lessons, I always make sure the students are enjoying what they're learning. That is my #1 priority. I emphasize improvisation the most for all my students so they are able to express themselves freely on their instrument! From my experience, most of my students, if not all, practice diligently and consistently because they want to! Not because they are forced to, but because they love to. I explore all types of genre from hip-hop, rock, classical, and jazz in order to expand the student's musical palette. After dipping into each type of genre, I create a personalized agenda for whatever the student wishes to learn more about!
For every student, I first find out their personal interests in music as well as outside the music to develop a personal agenda for them. This personal agenda consists of different basic training, exercises, and repertoire that are designed to make them a better overall musician all the while becoming more skilled at the type of genre they wish to learn. On top of that, we spend a small portion of our lesson just listening and analyzing music. This trains the student's ears to understand music on a deeper level and to notice the smaller details that create the big picture.
My approach to teaching is completely different for each and every student. First and foremost, I first try to understand the student's pace and his/her previous knowledge in the respective instrument. That way, I can assign personalized practice routines to get them started. From there, I start to set goals, push their potential, and leap towards challenges that pushes the student's passion and curiosity. Ultimately, the goals I set for myself as a teacher is to provide the student with the ability to practice smart, diligently, and push their own creative minds into the music.
