I have taught piano since my college days. I have seen the student's joy and pride through his/her musical accomplishment. Not only do I teach how to play the keyboard, but focus on the understanding of the music being played because that truly is the key (no pun intended) to successful learning. I believe in positive reinforcement and develop a 1-1 relationship with the child and parent. On another level, learning music positively impacts the development of my younger students in math, analysis, coordination, language, and discipline. My adults students enjoy being able to learn an art they always wanted to learn.
I use several methods; Royal Conservatory of Music, Alfred, and Faber to name a few. These publishers provide lesson books, theory, and pieces. The selection of books will vary because there is no "one size fits all" solution. I introduce fundamentals, then solo pieces in various styles. Often same concepts are used in different types of music. So for example, musical structure within a piece can be shown in classical and even popular music! Lessons are geared to be fun so loving to play piano will be a lifetime joy.
My first lesson is a casual meeting with the student (child/parent, or adult). I want to both meet and start to develop a good relationship and understanding with all involved. With younger students I talk with the parent and show them what we are working on and the logic behind it. Of course, this strategy applies to adults as well. I watch the student's progress very carefully and acknowledge accomplishments because this creates enthusiasm and further development. For me, it is the greatest feeling to see the smile in my student's face! They have found the joy that music can bring!

Barbara is a kind and gentle teacher with exceptional abilities on the piano. Her understanding of theory and structure - combined with her knowledge of how to help a student excel have impressed me over the 40 years I've seen her grow as a musician and as an instructor. She's truly a great fit for any student of any level.
Barbara has shared her talents at the piano by accompanying the EMES Choir this past year. She is an amazing professional, performing in many different styles. Barbara is wonderful to work with and cares deeply about setting students up for success. The students in my classes love having her in rehearsal and she loves sharing her passion for making great music with them.
I have known Barbara for a number of years on both a professional and personal basis. Barbara truly loves all things piano - performing, teaching and even practicing. Barbara’s soft spoken, patient, thoughtful demeanor and her knowledge and love of piano, make her a natural and effective piano teacher. I highly recommend Barbara.
