2020 Marquis Who's Who of American Women
I am a dedicated musician and teacher who loves what I do. My life has been rich with various musical experiences in many different genres. I enjoy them all from classical to pop and rock. My joy is watching people grow in their music endeavors and helping them along the way. I believe in teaching music that builds and strong foundation and brances out inro the music that the student is most interested in for I find that that really motivates them and makes the necessary practicing much less of a chore!
My teaching experience is widely varied, from teaching in my private studio, to college classes, and music center studios. I have 30 years of experience and a teacher and a lifetime as a musician. I have published music books as well, and have also played bass and keyboards in bands. I have even had church jobs, playing piano, organ and directing choirs, so you can see that my experience is wide and covers a broad spectrum. The most important thing about me, however, besides my great love of music, is my great joy in teaching!
I tend to use the Faber Piano Adventure series as the basis for starting lessons. This series is very widely known and it is really one of the best methods available for teachers to use. I like it because two people are the authors and composers, a husband a wife team, and together they create interesting and enjoyable compositions that students of all ages like to play. They provide a wide variety of types of music from classical to blues to jazz and brance out into Christmas and Disney songs, all in different levels, so students can have a consistent series to grow and to never get bored!
Lessons should be positive experiences where students are nurtured and encouraged so that they look forward to their lessons. I like students to keep a practice notebook which we fill out during the lesson. Rather than being required to practice for a set number of minutes per day, we instead keep track of how many times an exercise or song is practiced. Stickers are given for a good practice week and the burden of supervising practice by the parents is greatly eased. I find this system works better than a timer, for 30 minutes without direction takes forever!
