Overview:
I love teaching piano, keyboard, and guitar and have been doing so for over thirty years in my Webster Groves studio. I have a degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Fontbonne University. Following graduation, I taught at the Saint Louis Institute of Music for eighteen years. I've also done course work in music therapy at Maryville University and have worked in area nursing homes for the past twenty five years. I have studied piano with Jules Gentile from Paris, France, Sister John Joseph Bezdek at Fontbonne University, and Lyndon Croxford at the Saint Louis Insitute of Music.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience began at the age of thirteen. I gave lessons out of my home in Webster Groves, Missouri. I have been teaching students out of my home for thirty plus years. I will also go to the home. I like to encourage students to practice daily. Each student has a practice log which they have to fill out on a weekly basis. My job is to provide structure and consistency within a framework that is also fun for each students. I adhere to Randall Faber's research showing that between ages 4 and 7, it's all about fun; between ages 7 and 10, it's about what they can do; between 10 and 19 it's about showing off; and nineteen and above, it's about having a source of enjoyment.
METHODS USED
I love Faber and Faber for piano. I have several very young students doing the series for preschoolers. These materials are supplemented with Keith Snell's literature books. All students do at least one duet per year and two recitals.

I love to take students as far as they can go in their lesson books and then back that up with the technic books, which are generally a bit easier. That helps with pacing the lessons and it pads the practice times. For guitar students I use the Essential Elements of Guitar and the Bay books

LESSON STYLE
Each lesson starts with technical exercises, follwed by repertoire. Each student does theory during the lesson with twenty questions at the end. During this time, I do all review theory material. Difficult passages are marked with a "P" chart. They have to play the difficult part four times and get a "P" for each perfect playing. Every fifth time they have to repeat from the beginning to integrate the difficult part with the rest of the song. This ensures perfection in their pieces. I also do technical exercises. They have to play each challenging part ten times in a row perfectly.

Miss Barbara is terrific. She is encouraging and patient with our 5-year-old while keeping her focused and engaged. Our daughter's progress—and enthusiasm—has been remarkable.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
