Overview:
I’m a singing teacher who is passionate about helping my students find their voice and tell their own personal stories in the songs we work on. Some become professional singers/songwriters if that is their goal. Some are accepted into college music programs. After two years as a Musical Theater major at Tisch School of the Arts, I graduated from New York University’s Gallatin Independent Study program, merging my wider interests in Classic Texts, Science, and Writing while continuing to study singing privately in NYC. I am also grateful to have performed in two award-winning NYU films that aired on HBO.
EXPERIENCE
At 18, I was hired by Wurlitzer to teach piano lessons to children in their homes where a piano had been rented. If the family bought the piano at the end of the term, I received a commission. After teaching many piano lessons I also sold two pianos. At NYU, I joined a dance company that performed lively dances at elementary schools, where they had me singing a call and response song with our young audiences. Soon I was asked to teach the other dancers to sing as well, and those were my first singing students. I’ve been teaching singing ever since. Even though Musical Theater is my first love, many of my students study a wide variety of music styles and bring personal storytelling skills to all music. They perform at open mics, school showcases, local musicals, churches, and clubs. Several have started touring bands or become professional singers/songwriters with their original songs receiving radio airplay. Others become popular Sinatra singers with regular paying gigs at Italian restaurants and local family events.
METHODS USED
It is good to start singing lessons around age 11, when the voice starts to change - even though it can feel awkward at first. There are hormonal, physical, and emotional changes in those early teen years that respond well to the lyrics and stories told in many contemporary songs. I work to match the stories as well as melody and vocal range to the songs I give all my students. We explore different music styles, and I’m looking for songs that resonate deeply with the students’ life stories and emotions. With adults, I follow their lead and teach with the songs they request, occasionally introducing something new that I think will broaden their horizons or musical range.
LESSON STYLE
I make a point of talking with each student at the beginning of the lesson about how they are, how they feel, and if anything is going on in their life that they have strong feelings about. Listening to their voice as they talk and tell me about their day, I can hear how their voice sounds without them being self-conscious. Do they sound excited, run-down, or struggling with allergies? Then we will work on vocal exercises that I’ve already taught them, and maybe some new ones based on what I hear in their voice now. If they seem to have an emotional story to tell, I will pick a song on the spot to reflect how they feel that day. Or we will work on a song we have sung in the past that suits my efforts to move them forward in their training. It can be thrilling to hear their authentic voice show up in a well-written song that brings their own emotions to the surface.

Best vocal coach I’ve ever had and much more. Helped sort out my voice and teenage brain all at the same time. Working with Barbara isn’t just the regular conventional lessons it’s the extra edge that develops the artist in the most healthy expression and gives a singer that edge over competitors when needed. Changed my life.

I started singing again after a fifteen year layoff. Gigs were booking up fast and I knew I needed to step up my performances. I was lucky to find Barbara S.! She not only helped me get my voice back to what it once was, she worked with me on putting a story behind every song. It's amazing how much that helps your overall performance. I've since moved across the country but still use these lessons to this day!

Barbara is a superb vocal coach! She understands how to unlock the beauty and power and range of her students’ voices. She also understands what makes a singer’s voice “listenable”. I recommend her highly!

Barbara cares about her students. She is not just a voice teacher for my son, but a coach and mentor who cares about his comfort level and meets him where he is. She is able to help him express his inner world and tell his story. With a solid background in her musical field, she trains his voice at the appropriate level, so he reaches his full potential. I saw improvement in my son's singing voice after just a few months of working with her and even more so recently. Her music selection for my son has been vibrant, classy, and authentic. She is a gem.

5 stars for Barbara! I still use the warms that she did with me before every performance. She made my voice stronger and I learned how to use my body properly while singing. I’m confident anytime I need to sing somewhere because I was trained by the best.

Music is an artform of deep emotional connection and storytelling, and the best musicians and music coaches reflect that in their teachings. Barbara S is a wonderful and dynamic vocal coach that develops these very things with every student she's trained. All through my high school performing career, Barbara helped me find and develop my personal voice as an artist, with lessons that placed an emphasis not only on storytelling and lyrical interpretation, but also vocal health and maintenance. Moving through college and beyond, she's continuously been a fantastic resource, not only as a mentor but a colleague and friend. I cannot recommend her services enough!

I don't hesitate to give Barbara 5 stars for the work we have done together. Barbara met me exactly where I was at (beginner). She worked with a lot of skill, insight, attunement and empathy to bring me along to the next level, over and over. She is dedicated to bringing out the best in people by calling fourth whatever is inside them into the performance. I also had a lot of fun and enjoyed the sessions immensely, You absolutely cannot go wrong with Barbara. I have learned so much. She is the best.

Working with Barbara is a wonderful experience! She balances technique and storytelling while bringing out the layers in your voice. She helped me audition for a music school that I was accepted into and truly cares about your personal goals with music.
