Music is my life. I have been playing piano since I was 6 (18 years) and guitar, bass guitar, drums for 10 years. I graduated last fall with a bachelor's degree in Piano Performance from ASU Jonesboro AR. I have learned a variety of expansive repertoire ranging from Renaissance through Contmemporary. I love it all! Throughout this time and experience, I have had the pleasure of talking and recieving professional training from very highly advanced Doctors of Music and performers around the nation. My favorite thing to do in life is share what I have learned to help other people enjoy music as much as I do.
I have been teaching since I was 18. I strongly encourage at least 10-30 minutes a day of practice. I believe in experiencing the JOY in music, but it does require discipline and work. I can also help with compositional ideas, as I took 2 years of composition as my secondary applied area of study for my bachelor's degree. Improvisation is another aspect I can help in as I was pianist for the ASU Jazz Band for 3 semesters.
There are a few method books to choose from. I have used Alfreds, Piano Adventures, Hal Leonard, and others. Whichever you do decide, for beginners be sure to purchase the "primer" level.
As I said before, my favorite thing to do is help others learn and experience something good and new in music. When I teach I tend to lean towards internalizing and interpreting a piece for what it means to you. This involves asking yourself questions that transcend what is on the page, and helping you think about the music in a new way. Since I have played repertoire from 5 major Periods, I am confident that I can guide you correctly in the realms of compositional style, technical aspects, and historical correlations.
