Overview:
I have just relocated (04/18) to the Hickory, NC area and I'm looking for some new students to get started in the area. I have over 40 years in the music business performing, teaching, recording, composing. I can teach most types and styles of music and I specialize in improvisation. I love to see people learn, progress, and have as much fun playing music as I do. I came from the Colorado Springs, CO area. I was teaching at the same studio, my home and at several students homes there for about 11 years. I have references from both the studio and students I can share. I also taught in other states prior to Colorado and have performed over most of the United States in varying venues, churches, and festivals.
EXPERIENCE
PIANO, FLUTE, SAXOPHONE and VOICE             I have been active in the music industry for over 40 years as a teacher and performer, along with holding positions as musical director, arranger, accompanist, and in show production.              Growing up near New York City gave me a wealth of opportunities for musical studies and experiences. I first studied with concert pianist Frank Giampolo for many years in Bridgeport, CT. He recognized my love of jazz and incorporated it, along with a classical repertoire, theory, harmony and arranging into my private studies. I then attended Housatonic College where the Costanzo brothers, Sonny and Sam, headed the music department. Sonny is a renowned trombonist in the New York City area who has played over the years with Clark Terry’s big band and now leads his own.             One of the highlights into my ventures with jazz was to study under John Mehegan, noted scholar, author and educator. John set into motion the study of jazz theory and improvisation with his four book series on the subject, which is still highly recognized today. Over the years he held posts at the Manhattan School of Music, Julliard and Yale.
METHODS USED
I don't tend to rely on any one method. I have quite a bit of material that I have personally developed over the years. I try to take each student as an individual with their own unique personality, likes and dislikes, and motivations. So I enjoy customizing a lesson plan that is as individual as each student. I do use some published materials that I have found to work well with beginning students. Some of these include: Faber Piano Lesson series, Rubank for sax and flute, The Contemporary Singer for voice. books on Improvisation by John Mehegan, Andy Levine and Jamey Abersold, along with my own materials.
LESSON STYLE
In the past I have carefully guided students through the selection of materials that would insure steady, gradual progress. Learning a musical instrument should be a fun and enjoyable experience with a sense of personal satisfaction and fulfillment. I place great emphasis on areas such as theory, harmony, transposition, ear training, sight-reading, improvisation and areas of interest to the student such as musical styles.  Whether you aspire to one day play professionally, attend a music school or just play for your own enjoyment, we can set goals together to reach the level you desire.
