I love helping people learn music. I honestly believe that anyone can play an instrument with some work and everyone has a song to share. In 2012, I graduated from the University of Hawaii with a Bachelors Degree in Music Business. I started a band my junior year of high school called Local Uprising and we have traveled the states, opened up for some of the biggest reggae acts like Steel Pulse, Alpha Blondy, JBoog and Stephen Marley, we had #1 songs on radio and got nominated last year for Reggae Breakout Artist of the Year. I have been performing on stages for 14 years and have a lot of experience and skills I picked up along the way that I want to teach.
My teaching experience started back in High School. I was in a music class and every month I would get to teach kids how to play the ukulele. In college, I started teaching private music lessons and worked at a local music shop and I would teach people how to play songs before purchasing an instrument. I taught students of all ages ranging from a 3 year old little girl to a 68 year old retired mailman. I really do believe that anyone can learn music and how to play an instrument. With my teaching, I want to be the guidance I never had, and I want to teach a new age of musicians.
I teach music differently. When learning a skill, consistency equals success. Lessons have to be engaging, personalized and fun. When teaching my students, I find out what music they love, their favorite songs and artists. I find out what music they would love to learn. Then I let that guide my instruction by teaching the students songs they want to learn (while teaching chords, theory and ways to improve) starting with the easier songs to keep it fun and engaging. I also encourage practicing consistently at home between lessons. For intermediate students, after learning a bunch of their favorite songs, we add a new layer. Now we start creating music. We can start from a song they learned or a little idea and I help guide them to creating something new.
I take a very personalized teaching style. Like I said in the My Methods section, I first find out the students favorite music, musicians, songs. Then I create lessons around that information. I am teaching the students chords, theory and structure while they are learning their favorite songs. And let me tell you, when students learn their first song, it is a rush that motivates them to learn more. I am very patient and work with students at their pace. I keep things fun so that students want to pick up the instrument. I also teach students to set a goal. To pick up the instrument and play around on it for 5 minutes every day. This little challenge sets students up to succeed and ramps up their progress.
“Thank you Beau for reigniting my love for the guitar. A year ago, I got frustrated with my progress and quit playing the guitar. Beau's teaching style is incredible. He shows you little tricks and things he learned in his guitar journey and it instantly helped push me over that hump. Now its back to the guitar!"
“I was surprised just how much I learned in a single lesson! Beau combined my beginner skill level with the song styles I love into a personalized lesson set. The online instruction format works well and it’s fantastic having live demonstration, feedback, and coaching from Beau’s experience. I’m excited to be making music with my guitar and highly recommend personalized lessons from Beau!”
