I am currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Oboe Performance at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts studying with Jaren Atherholt. As an orchestral player, I have had the privilege performed with the UNCSA Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Maestros Larry Rachleff and Christopher Lees, and with the UNCSA Ballet Orchestra in their 2018 and 2019 production of The Nutcracker. This past semester I was the featured English horn soloist for Alfred Reed’s Russian Christmas Music conducted by Maestro Mark Norman. I previously served as Principal Oboist of the Wilmington Youth Orchestra and Greensboro Youth Orchestra. As an active chamber musician and Baroque enthusiast, I have been a member of the Anemos Wind Quintet and am currently a member the Three Cornered Hat Piano-Wind Trio, and performed Bach Cantatas working closely with Glenn Seibert and Dr. Dmitri Shteinberg. I have performed in masterclass for esteemed oboists Robert Atherholt, Dr. Reid Messich, Joseph Robinson, and Hollis Ulaky. I attended the John Mack Oboe Camp in 2018 and was a camp counselor at Interlochen Arts Camp in 2019. My 2019/20 season includes performances at Unity Church in Winston-Salem, NC. I maintain a private studio at East Forsyth High School where I also teaches masterclasses and group lessons. In my spare time Becca enjoys spending time outside, painting and making reeds for my reed business.
Since learning the oboe I have been searching for every possibility to play the oboe. It all started out with my high schools Wind ensemble, and then trying out for the schools pit orchestra when the musical season rolled around! Sooner or later I had been recruited to play with the schools choir as well and then found myself seeking more and so then I asked my Band director if there were any local ensembles and he told me about the community band to which I auditioned and made it! but even then I went out of my way to find a private teacher and she points me toward a youth symphony a town over and I got into that as well.. Then I auditioned for an arts school a few hours away and that opened my eyes to the endless amounts of opportunity at my fingertips. I had made many different chamber groups and the one I am currently with I am making a concert series with and doing competitions. If you have any more questions about what I have done then all you need to do is ask!
My method are getting with the student for a first lesson to see what they have done and what they are able to do. Then get them to play for me whatever they wish to play for me at the moment and then we will go from there. Depending on what they are able to do then I will decided what kind of warm-up to d with them. Like for myself I do 15 minutes of long-tones on oboe and then 10-15 minutes on English horn. After doing that I made sure to do 20-30 minutes of scales just to make sure I work on my fundamentals. I might work with the student to make a practice journal so that they can possibly hold themselves accountable and so we can both track what they are doing! I have different etude books and fundamental books that we would be looking through and depending on the level the student is at will determine what book we will use.
I think my teaching style is try to work with the student with whatever they're going through musically and being as patient as I possibly can so that the student feels they can prosper in an easy environment. Ever since getting my first few students I had a newfound love for teaching. Just being able to see the smile on a students face when they realize the work they have been doing is finally paying off and starting the instrument was worth it in the end!
