I am a fun, outgoing and passionate instructor who sets goals with the student and works with them to achieve them. I have a very diverse background in performance and in teaching as well. I most enjoy performing jazz, classical, and musical theater. I have taught students as young as four years old, up through adult learners on various instruments and at various experience levels. I regularly perform on trombone, especially in the genre of New Orleans-Style Jazz. Along with regular performances, I also enjoy composing and arraigning music for in a wide variety of genres.
The bulk of my teaching experience comes from being a High School, Middle School and Beginning Band Director for 9 years, as well as teaching Brass and Marching Band at the college level for 7 years. Along with teaching band instruments, I have experience teaching elementary general music, incorporating singing, ukuleles, world drumming, and technology into my lessons. Additionally, I have been teaching private lesson continuously on some level for the past 25+ years, incorporating many online-format lesson since 2017.
My methods are based primarily on the needs and the interests of the student. I am very flexible and can adapt my teaching to fit these needs and interests. Students come from many different backgrounds and teaching to the ways they are either most comfortable or to fit the needs of their public school music teacher (if applicable) is essential for success. I have gained a great deal of experience teaching online-format lessons and have been finding ways to make the most of the format.
During lessons I try to keep a fun but focused atmosphere while having the students play as much as possible. I also believe modeling on the instrument being taught for the student can be a way for students to understand the goals they are trying to achieve. With online-format lessons it is important to be clear, animated, and engaging to make the best of the time. I also believe having "upgraded" technology is a benefit to this format, which I have began to incorporate in my teaching as well.
