I have been playing saxophone for more than 20 years. I was awarded multiple scholarships at South Plains College to play in their Symphonic and Jazz Bands. I have many years of experience playing at in my church choir as well. As a result of which I have played professionally at numerous weddings and other similar events. I have helped, develop and train several young musicians for performances at church. I have over 30 semester hours of college level musical education. I look forward to helping young players develop their skill and discover the joy and opportunity musical ability can bring into their lives.

I would begin with whatever book your child's school has provided. This would provide consistency and avoid confusion. Aside from this there are fundamentals such as scales and rhythm exercises that are universally efficacious and essential. I would also work specifically on whatever piece the student is currently working on. I would find it best to find out at what level the student is at before tailoring a more specific program. I think it is best to also find out what specifically the student is hoping to accomplish via private lessons. Making All Region Band? Moving up a chair in his/her band? etc...
Practice makes perfect. I believe the basics are the most important part to any education including a musical one. Just as a building requires a solid foundation before it can rise to the sky so too do students need to master fundamentals before moving on to the more challenging aspects of their instruments. I mastering the saxophone I would focus on basics such as fingering, scales, posture, breathing technique, rhythm and embouchure. In helping a student with specific piece it is essential to identify trouble areas and work those spots until mastery is established to the point of muscle memory.
