Overview:
I am a passionate full time musician that both teaches and performs. I have been teaching private lessons for 9 years and performing for 4 years. I started out as an academically driven violinist while playing guitar recreationally. However, in college fell in love with playing guitar in the Jazz band and soon their after, I found my love for songwriting. I wrote, recorded, and published under the band name City of Decades while performing all over the country. While I've still held on to my academic roots on the violin, guitar and singing became my main focus for performances.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching lessons in my own home, online, or in my students home consistently for the past 9 years when I first started at the tail end of my senior year in high school. Teaching lessons quickly became my part time job in college, and from there, it continued onward! I took my academic and recreational background on violin, guitar, and voice and carried it into my private lessons. Being in the studio and creating songs had me pick up the piano, ukulele, and bass guitar which I then took on as instruments I teach. Through the years, I learned to concurrently teach the musical fundamentals to my students along with how those fundamentals apply to their instrument in a broad context! I intend to always tailor my lessons to my students desires, needs, and curiosity and keep the inspiration thriving.
METHODS USED
For students of all ages, I start with a small book focusing on the essential elements of the instrument while teaching them something fun and recognizable. As basic techniques are acquired and musical concepts are grasped, I tailor the lesson to what the students long term goals are. An example would be a 12 year old on violin wants to excel in his or her orchestra program, so I pick certain pieces, books, and techniques to teach that will help them accomplish this. For an adult who wants to learn guitar for mere enjoyment, I teach the basics, and then quickly apply them as we figure out their favorite songs as we figure out short and long term goals for them (such as performing at an open mic.)
LESSON STYLE
I always tailor my lessons to my students needs and desires and never waste time. Nothing is more important than a students progress and growth so I weed out all the irrelevant or potentially boring information in music lessons and cut straight to the chase of what is going to help the student learn and enjoy their progress. I encourage consistent feedback and communication so that I may know I am succeeding in navigating the students musical experience. If something is not making sense, you've had a bad day, you're doubting yourself, or if I am just plain boring you, I want to hear about it!
