Bachelor Degree: Southern Illinois University Carbondale
My name is Benji, I am a young professional currently based in San Marcos, Texas. Born in South West Missouri, I grew up in the outdoors, and when I am not Teaching, You can find me somewhere in the woods. I love mountain biking, rock climbing, hiking, camping, cooking, and playing the drums! I received a Bachelor's degree in Audio Engineering in 2018, and moved down to Texas hill country shortly after. Today, I am continuing on to teach students at school, as well as musically. This is a big passion in my life, and I don't think I will ever stop!
I started playing drums and percussion 12 years ago, both classically, and privately trained. I was taught all play styles, and approaches to percussive arts. In high school, I was apart of a drum line and in 2015, I started drumming in a Rockabilly group in southern Illinois. Shortly after, I began to fill in for a rock band, jazz band, and another rockabilly band in the area. Since moving to Texas, I have started to teach with Hays CISD as a guest teacher/tutor.
Typically, lesson plans are build around students goals. Some students may not have an interest in learning from a "traditional" approach from a book. Although this is highly recommended, I create different lesson plans for each individual student.
I typically use and coach students from "Stick Control: for the snare drummer", "Syncopation for the modern drummer" and "The Blue Book" for drums. From time to time, I have also taught with "fakebook" charts for jazz drummers as well as play along tracks of various artists.
My teaching approach generally depends on who the student is, and what that student intends to accomplish. Generally, I am more of a music "coach" who teaches by teaching, and then doing. I typically use a book for the basis of reference, and then encourage the student to go beyond the notes on the page. I have a bigger passion in coaching students not to just copy another persons style or to simply learn exactly how a drum part goes. I am a firm believer that they should develop their own unique style, and preform so on the basis of being an original musician, even when playing covers of songs.
