Music has been a big part of my entire life. I began playing piano at the age of 5 and flute at the age of 10. I was involved in the music program in my church as a teenager singing in the youth choir and playing in the handbell choir. I excelled in my music through high school which caused me to pursue music as a career. I was the principal flutist in the high school band and in the college band and orchestra. I have 2 degrees in music education plus 30 credit hours of continuing education courses beyond my Master's degree.
I began teaching private flute lessons right out of high school. I also started and directed a children's handbell choir for ages 8-12. After graduating from college, I have taught general music to grades Pre-K through high school for 25 years. I have directed children's choirs, teenage choirs, and handbell choirs. I have taught piano and flute lessons for 30 years. I have played my flute for churches, weddings and community bands. I am currently teaching music appreciation at a community college.
I have used many methods books for piano and flute. When I started teaching lessons, I lived in a military town. Since these students moved a lot, I would continue teaching out of the books they were currently using to keep they're progress consistent. I still have this philosophy unless a student is unhappy with their current method. When I start a beginning student, I like to use Alfred's Premier Course. One book is used for new concepts with 3 other as support with technique, theory, and performance. In flute, I like to use the Essentials book along with solos, duets, and exercises. For both piano and flute, I believe scales and chords are important to study as well. I am very open to teaching songs that interest my students
My teaching follows the books quite a bit, so that the student remembers what was taught when they go home and practice. I like for the student to have a notebook that I can write in supplemental information. I understand that each student learns differently and I am able to differentiate my teaching methods to best fit the student needs. I enjoy getting to know each student's personality, strengths and challenges so that we can work together to make a fun and enjoyable time if learning and progressing in music.
