I am a music educator with ten years of teaching experience! I graduated with a Bachelors in Music and Childhood & Special Education in 2013 and my Masters in Education in Music Education. For the past six years, I have worked in a middle school, helping to prepare students for auditions for performing arts high schools. I also direct my school's Choir and Musical Theatre productions. I also sing with two choirs throughout New York City. I am primarily a vocalist, but am able to play and teach beginning guitar.
I have taught music for ten years: two in elementary music, the rest in middle school. I currently conduct individual voice lessons with students interested in auditioning for performing arts high schools, most of whom have been accepted! I also direct my school's Choir and Musical Theatre productions. I have held private voice lessons for children and teens for the past five years, working mainly with classical and musical theatre repertoire. I have been teaching beginning guitar to students for the past six years.
I am trained in Music Learning Theory, which promotes the building of the foundational aural and oral music skills which lead to music literacy. For young students, this may look like playing music games and echoing tonal & rhythm patterns to help develop a vocabulary. For older voice lesson students, activities based in Music Learning Theory will help build fluency and confidence when learning new solo repertoire. For beginning guitar students, I use Music Will methods to teach chord structures and practice techniques. Regardless, students will have an opportunity to drive the focus of our lessons - individuals choosing genres and pieces that they are excited to learn is very important to me as an educator!
Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. My lessons have a heavy focus on the basic and transferable skills that can be applied to all repertoire.
