Overview:
I'm a very dedicated instructor who loves working with my students. And I learn as much from them as they do from me, which enhances my ability to teach. In 1966 I graduated from Millikin University in Decatur, Il, where I been a full scholarship applied clarinet major. Earlier, I was a charter member of School Band of America-European concert tour. I was also the enlisted band leader for the Alabama Army National Guard Band, culminating with replacing the West Point band in New York and playing a concert at Rockefeller Center in New York City.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching clarinet began when I was in high school, giving lessons to 18+-students after school and on Saturdays. Later, in college, I continued to teach on the weekends, helping to cover additional expenses. Then, in the national guard band, I taught private lessons to several of my fellow clarinetists. After about a two year "sabbatical" I really missed teaching. I then began acquiring new students through the Methodist church I attend. That was very rewarding in many more ways than financial, and so I continue on today.
METHODS USED
I typically do two things. First, I tailor my lessons to fit the age, experience, and ability of each individual. I try to listen carefully to what they say, and try to figure out what they really mean. Since each student is an individual I do not categorize them. Second, I do rely upon well-known publications to supplement my lessons. But mostly I try to make the experience a fun thing. I do, however, make the first lesson pretty difficult, to discern the level of interest. I then back off, and move carefully at their pace, trying to keep it a fun and learning experience.
LESSON STYLE
I do request they practice a minimum of 30 minutes per day, 5 days a week. Also, I spend at least an hour preparing for a one hour lesson. At the end of each lesson I critique the progress, and give the student, and its parent a written copy of the critique, as well a written lesson plan for the upcoming week. In this way everyone involved is well informed as to what has transpired and what is desired in the next week. In this manner I know what to expect of myself and my expectations from my student.
