I'm a teacher and student at heart. I believe that at any level of learning support and encouragement are always better than just do it because I say so. This is the reason I left a scholarship from Berklee in the 90's to pursue my true passion; touring the world as a professional musician. I have seen a slice of life in my musical travels with the hundreds of artists I have worked with and I bring over 2 decades of experiences to every lesson, with every student, every time and I look forward to meeting new students who want to take the journey with me..
I have been teaching on and off for over 2 decades. In that time I have 3 instructional DVD's, a book published by Mel Bay and hundreds of hours of home instruction to my credit. Believe it or not there is a similarity in directing and writing for TV and entering your home to teach drums to yourself or your children; you are inviting in a point of view. An opinion. A trusted person that can entertain as well as inspire you or your children to be better everyday. Okay. maybe TV inspiring us to be better is a reach, but myself as a drum instructor I am there to do that very thing; I am there to support the student in learning, to stand beside them as they discover their potential and to make their hour spent with me "alive time". A time full of humor, learning and playing that the student will look forward to week after week.
The way I teach is about showing the student "the dance" of drums. The exercises and rudiments they practice are the movements in a dance. For example, with Punk drums the movements need to be mastered and played fast so the student will have to practice to get the movements up to speed instead of focusing on the beat. With Pop drums the movements need to be comfortable but precise as the student learns the importance of a metronome and how to relate to it by thinking of it as a member of the band. Those are just two examples of the world of drumming where there are so many styles and so many dances to learn that the student could spend a lifetime mastering and learning them all.
My teaching style is very Freddie Gruber, if you don't know who that is I recommend you look him up on youtube! I believe in motion. In understanding the motions your body has to make and repeating them like an athlete to get the same sound on the drum every time you hit a drum. In sitting down to play and not be nervous you will mess up, but love the fact that you will mess up and it's okay and part of this process. To never look for approval but seek out that you want to dance on the drums and when you perform get excitement and enjoyment that others are dancing with you. Because that's what drums and music are; they connect us and keep us dancing and that's what my style will help you do.
