A part of my musical life over the last 40 years has been to teach our young people. There are so many great advantages to young people getting to be around professional players to hear us play and impart the techniques that got us to where we are. I have performed with many of entertainment's greatest artists to include Natalie Cole, Bob Hope, Jack Jones, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Anchorage Symphony, The Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, The University of Southern Mississipp Orchestra and Jazz Band, Sandi Patty, Frankie Valle, and the touring Broadway Musical "Hello Dolly." I also performed in the 1977 Walt Disney College All American Band or Baritone Sax.
Teaching has always been a passion of mine. I learned early on that professional players can make a deep impact on young players. This is not to suggest that band directors can't make profound impressions as many of today's music teachers are fabulous players, also. I was in the United States Air Force band for 20 years and I endevoured to volunteer in every city I was stationed. I do require commitment from my students and I expect the assigned lessons to be followed. Also, we will study music theory and compostion as it applies to learning your away around the saxophone. I look forward to working with many of you.
I meet each student where they are and design goals based on their learning style and their willingness to practice, by that I mean that I expect all my students to practice, but some will want to play way above the call of duty. I typically write out the practice music that I think is important for each student. Also, I try to meet the student somewhere around what they need to learn and what they would like to play.
I am an eclectic man and approach teaching in that fashion. I try to teach with the learning styles of the students while ensuring that all of the basics are learned and adhered to. Music is one of the great tools to teach people many things about life while teaching them how to play their horns well. Teamwork, individuality, discipline, uniformity, and dedication are just a few of the things imparted to music students and students of the arts all together.
