I am a passionate, thoughtful and motivated instructor who loves to work with students and help them reach their full musical potential. I follow ABRSM (associated board of the royal schools of music) guidelines and create a lesson plan that includes technical exercises, proper piano repertoire and theory awignments. I encourage students to select repertoire that highlights their strengths. I like to help them prepare for recitals and public performances. My past students have been placed in competitions.
I am certified through the UK schools - the Trinity college of music, and the Royal schools of music, London, in classical piano. I trained at St Annes high school and the Calcutta school of music, India, where I studied under the then principal Fauzia Marikar. That enabled me to develop a methodology that is structured, standardized and rigorous. I've taught piano for almost 5 years. I was an instructor at music and arts as well as other local music schools. I believe that a classical foundation gives students the tools to explore other genres - contemporary, folk, etc.
For beginners, I start with the basics - proper posture and hand position, introduction to the keyboard and note recognition. In my experience, the Faber series is the most widely followed to get students started on their musical journey. As students progress, I ensure that they develop a repertoire that consists of at least 3 songs. I emphasize the importance of technical exercises that begin with 5 finger scales and advance to proper octave scales. I add chords and arpeggios in order to improve accuracy.
I allow each student to progress at his or her own pace. I set realistic goals at each lesson in terms of technique. piano repertoire and theory. I make journal entries at every lesson to record what was covered. I encourage students to participate in recitals and can make arrangements for them to perform, as I beieve that public performance is an important milestone in their musical education. For those who are interested in exams and competitions, I help them to choose repertoire that will highlight their strengths.
