Degrees / Training / Special Info:

BM, Vanderbilt University, Musical Arts
M. Ed, Vanderbilt University, Music Education
ECC & Suzuki Flute Books 1-3, Great Lakes Suzuki Institute/Heyhoe Woods, Suzuki Association of the Americas

Overview:
In addition to her studies at Vanderbilt, Blythe studied at the Institute of European Studies, in Vienna, Austria. There, she had the opportunity of working with Ulrike Anton, and with Barbara Gisler-Haase, at Universiteat fur Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien. While an undergraduate, Blythe performed with various chamber ensembles and toured China with the university's orchestra. During her graduate studies, Blythe traveled to Costa Rica to work with El Sinem, a prototype of El Sistema, the music education program that originated in Venezuela. In 2010, she moved to Egypt to teach music at The International School of Choueifat in Cairo. She returned to the States in 2011 and completed Community-Word Project's Summer Institute for Advanced Teaching Artists. Recently, Blythe trained at Great Lakes Suzuki Institute in Guelph, Ontario. Blythe has performed with the Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Brooklyn Wind Symphony, has served as the woodwind judge for M.T.S.B.O.A.'s Solo and Ensemble Festival, and has participated in masters classes with Julius Baker, Erik Gratton, Mary Karen Clardy, and Kenneth B. Andrews. She is a member of the National Flute Association and the Suzuki Association of the Americas and has been featured in the Blair Quarternote.
EXPERIENCE
Blythe recently relocated to Maryland, but she has also taught in New York, New Jersey, and Tennessee, as well as internationally, in Egypt and Costa Rica. She has taught privately, worked in public schools at the secondary and elementary level, taught in community music schools and arts camps, and has worked with various organizations that provide free music education to students in need. Blythe has also had experience teaching online through Zoom. She is comfortable working with all ages and levels.
METHODS USED
Methods are tailored around the individual needs and goals of the student. Fundamentals in music theory are balanced with repertoire and lessons focus on developing practice skills that the student can use outside the lesson. The Suzuki method is ideal for beginning flute students, particularly young students. This approach allows students to become comfortable holding the instrument, producing a solid tone, and training the ear, before introducing notation. For beginning pianists, the Bastien series works well in terms of breaking down repertoire into manageable pieces and marking students' progress in early study.
LESSON STYLE
I see it as a great honor and serious responsibility to be able to teach music. Based on my own experience, the connection between the teacher and student is one of the most important factors in developing a student's passion for music, and encouraging them to progress. While my teaching approach varies with each individual, all students should feel supported and encouraged to be expressive players and thoughtful musicians.

Blythe is terrific! She's very positive; incredibly supportive; and very specific as to what she's asks my daughter to do. In addition to being a talented musician, she's a natural teacher. Can't recommend her highly enough. William

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
