Overview:
I have a great passion for music. It has become something that I just have to do. I love instilling the same passion in others too. Music is all about making others feel good and sound good too, which is a great metaphor for life.
I began playing music when I was small. My first instrument was singing, but I quickly became enamored with percussion. I played all throughout middle school and high shcool. I graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Music. I have studied Jazz Performance and played in various Jazz ensembles as well as Rock bands and Orchestra ensembles.
EXPERIENCE
I have taught privately for 13 years now including my own studio, Guitar Center, Gallatin Music, and London Studios. I have publicly taught drumline at Riverton High School. I can teach many different instruments at a beginner level, but drumset is my main instrument that I can teach from beginner to advanced. I approach music as another language involving elements of reading, writing, listening, and also speaking. The fifth element that language does not have is the playing aspect. The better a musician can vocalize their part, the better they can actually perform it on their instrument of choice.
METHODS USED
I am very goal oriented in teaching. I use a similar methodology as learning a language. I prefer the Hal Leonard books for beginning students. Some of the major aspects I like to focus on are three areas being 1) Rudiments, Scales, and Chords, 2) Educational books, 3) favorite song repertoire. For students younger than 15, I recommend only 30 minutes unless students are more experienced and very engaged in their instrument. Students older than 16 can take more advantage of a 45 minute or even an hour lesson. For adults, hour long lessons are preferred, but usually are spaced out to two weeks apart to allow busy students to fit enough practice and progress in to their schedule.
LESSON STYLE
Students all have a different reason as to why they are taking lessons. I make sure that the students are learning what they are interested in and always having fun while developing a new skill. I push students to set their own goals, to make practicing routine and intentional. We talk about ways to practice, tools to use, and how to accomplish what they are hoping to do. We focus on basics that guide them to learning their favorite songs and be able to play the way they dream about. I aim to have students choose the direction of lessons to help them be empowered in their learning.
