Overview:
I was born and raised in the Bay Area and found my passion for music at a young age. Since then, I have been fortunate enough to grow as a musician and experience some of the most wonderful moments of my life on stage. I received my Associate of Arts in Music from West Valley College in 2014. After which I received my Bachelor of Music from San Jose State University in 2017. I have performed roles in Postcard from Morocco and Orpheus in the Underworld with the SJSU Opera Theater. My solo works include the Fauré and Brahms Requiem, both with San Jose Staté University. In the summer of 2015, I appeared with the Symphony Silicon Valley in R.V. William’s Serenade to Music and in 2016 I performed Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass with the Ireland Limerick Sinfonia. Most recently I joined Peninsula Cantare as a soloist in the Carmina Burana and Mozart Vespers. I have also sung in the chorus with Opera San Jose for the past four years.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching started at my time at West Valley College. As a teacher assistant, I assisted students of a wide range of ages and levels. My experience as a teacher with younger students comes from my background in music education and choral conducting. I began teaching privately about a year ago. I teach beginning students, who learn important musicianship skills and music theory, to more advanced students, who seek to expand their repertoire and gain a deeper understanding of their instrument.
METHODS USED
I encourage all of my students to choose songs that they want to sing to ensure that they are enjoying what they are learning. For children and beginners, it is important that the fundamentals are in place, therefore I tend to spend more time on musicianship skills and music theory. For more advanced students it is important to understand how their unique instrument works, therefore I like to approach technique through pedagogy. Of course, there is no replacement for practice, which is why I assign practice journals to all of my students. With journals I can efficiently evaluate what is working and what needs to be addressed so that we can have more fun making the music we strive for!
LESSON STYLE
My passion for music stretches beyond performance and into my teaching. It is important that I share with others what I have learned through my own experiences, both as a student and a teacher. Developing the art of music can be one of the most rewarding experiences! It is my goal to work closely with each student so we work together to approach the style of learning that works best for them. By listening to feedback I ensure that tailor my lesson to the students needs. Encouraging exploration of sound, emotion, and everything else that is tied to music ensures that students stay engaged and have a positive experience.
